Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools System is governed by the Board of Education. For information about the board of education, click here.
According to the information found on the CMS website, the school functions "as the governing body of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools" and "the Board of Education has five key areas of responsibility:
- Hiring/firing the superintendent/CEO;
- Establishing school district policy;
- Determining the annual operating and capital budgets;
- Approving student assignment boundaries; and,
- Overseeing the management of the school district’s major systems, including budget and finance, curriculum and instruction, personnel and auxiliary services.
The CMS Board of Education meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. (open session); 4:30 p.m. (closed session, when needed) at the Government Center, 600 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.
The Board also may conduct an annual retreat session to establish priorities and plan its work for the upcoming year. "
Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners
The Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners is composed of nine members and "is the governing body of Mecklenburg County. Partisan elections are held in November of even-numbered years. Six members are elected from single-member districts, and three at-large members are elected by a county-wide vote. Commissioners elect a chairman and vice-chairman during their first meeting each December." (Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners Website)
